Inspiration can derive itself from a large number of spaces of one’s life or one’s perspective. It is with that, we can look within ourselves at even our most painful or poignant moments and pull something inspirational from it. For Bobby Hundreds, the leading force behind The Hundreds brand; working with Kuumba International on a unique project, brings us behind the veil of the creative. The “Banana Coconut” incense brings us back to Bobby’s adolescence, to which he pens the inspiration behind the project:
“I used to get called a “banana” growing up. Do kids still use this epithet? It was reserved for an Asian person who behaved culturally “Caucasian” (whatever that means). Yellow on the outside, white on the inside—get it? Because I listened to punk and skated in a time when all skaters had a blonde flop, I was on the receiving end of this one often. Banana. Last year, we were with the Kuumba guys in Japan, talking about a collaboration. They handmake the world’s best incense. When it came to working on a scent, I threw it out there. Banana. Like me.” – Bobby Hundreds
To utilize something that was meant to ridicule and stereotype and to this time later; use in a showing of positivity is powerful and uplifting. A message we all can get behind.
The Hundreds x Kuumba International “Banana Coconut” Incense is available currently on The Hundreds.
