While Tuesday served as the 20th anniversary of the day Space Jam all came into our lives and theaters…there is one more important piece of business on the docket when speaking up the film. And yes, we’re talking the iconic ‘Space Jam’ Air Jordan 11. Initially releasing to the public in 2000, not coinciding with the movie in 1996, the colorway was originally just for MJ, by virtue the pairs differ in color and in cosmetic features. After returning nine years later to close the last decade, that particular launch can be credited for the latest sneaker popularity boom. As well as the annual Air Jordan 11 year end tradition.
And with that we come full circle for the two-decade anniversary of the film and the sneaker that had Blanko saying, “cool shoes” as MJ stepped toward the circle at mid-court. This pair however features some similar touches to the unreleased OG which MJ debuted in the Playoff against the Orlando Magic but it maintains aspects from the releasing versions prior.
Breaking things apart and completely shifting the paradigm is the loss of the ’23’ on the heel in favor of a stitched ’45’. Again, ranging back to the PE MJ wore in-game but also in a way, speaking to an arc in the movie’s plot…where MJ was retired from basketball and was fully invested into being a baseball player. Back when he wore no. 45 and Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes convince MJ to end his hiatus and return to the hardwood.
The latest ‘Space Jam’ Air Jordan 11 Retro will release on Saturday, December 10th in family sizing, ranging from $55-$220 MSRP.
