Top 11 Sneakers of 2011 #5-1

With 2011 winding down and 2012 looming on the horizon, we would like to take a trip down memory lane and compile a list of what we believe to be the top 11 shoes of 2011. At the conclusion of the list, you can vote for the shoe you believe was sneaker of the year. Enjoy the list below and vote. Think we missed a shoe, give an honorable mention in the comments box below.

5. Air Jordan 3 “Black Cement”

Yes, we did indeed put the infamous ‘Black Cement’ Jordan 3 at #5. This was very hard for us to do, but we felt that there were four releases of 2011 bigger. The Black Cement released on Black Friday to extreme anticipation, capping off a great year for the Air Jordan 3 that included the White Cement, True Blue, Stealth and Black Flip. The Black Cement 3 was definitely the head of its class. And that is exactly why the Black Cement 3 is hailed by many as the greatest Air Jordan 3 ever.

4. Air Jordan 13 Ray Allen PE

With only 2,561 pairs released to the public, the same number of 3-point field goals made by future 1st ballot Hall of Famer, Ray Allen, the Air Jordan 13 Ray Allen PE was one of the biggest releases of the year. With much controversy and speculation around the release as word made its way that the shoe was dropping caused mass hysteria within the sneaker community. Eventually the shoe only released at the House of Hoops in Boston and at Sole Fly in Miami. The Celtic green and white colorway displayed a clean look for a shoe that already was filled with history itself.

3. Air Jordan 1 “Banned”

The Air Jordan 1 ‘Banned’ definitely definitely took the sneaker world by storm. The shoe that made sneaker hunting fun again, with the shoe releasing at several spots, it made those who truly wanted them search. And also, the shoe donned the Nike Air logo!! The shoe that started it all, that start a revolution and bonded a community, the Air Jordan 1 was done justice by its ‘Banned’ incarnation. Nike we thank you for September 15, 1985, without it…a lot of us would not be here so here’s a big thank you to the Air Jordan and Nike brands.

2. Air Jordan 11 “Concord”

This past Christmas Eve Eve release was probably the most chaotic and most anticipated. The ‘Concord’ Air Jordan 11 returned for the first time since 2000 (not counting the DMP release). And people the nation over waited in lines that wrapped around parking lots, malls, stores, etc. The ‘Concord’ release was unlike any we had ever seen…probably the ‘greatest’ Air Jordan 11 was true to form despite the blue ice sole alteration. But the Concord looked as clean as it did back in 1996.

1. Nike Air Mag 2011

We have now reached the end of our list…the number one shoe of 2011 is the Nike Air Mag. Marty McFly’s charity release was undoubtedly in our minds the biggest of 2011, despite the 1500 pairs available for auction on eBay…the Nike x Michael J. Fox Foundation collaboration was to benefit research for┬áParkinson’s┬áDisease. The auction raised more than $5.6 million in research funding, proving the power of the human spirit. And, we can do anything if we put our minds and a collective effort toward a task. We’re now only three years away from 2015….might we see the Nike Air Mag in its truest form then? Self-lacing please!! But, we take our hat off to you, the Nike Air Mag 2011, top sneaker of 2011.
